The tray itself, great. Super quick shipping. Taking apart the box to do a deep clean and get it working again? Lining up the screw holes on the tray with the box? Zero stars. I was ready to admit defeat and have a proper tantrum, hours later. Thank god for Reddit. The tray needs to be perfectly positioned for the sensors to work. What that position is? Only god knows. Try and try again until the darn box works. I ended up not being able to screw the tray back on, but so far no issues as it’s a tight fit. Seems to be working one week in, no issues.
Neakasa automatic litter boxes are, by far, my favorite on the market. I’ve tried several other brands, and Neakasa has consistently been the most reliable and least glitchy. That’s extremely important to me when it comes to an automatic litter box.
I’m currently dealing with a separate brand that has been frustratingly glitchy, and I’ve been trying to troubleshoot the issues. It has really made me appreciate how much I don’t have to deal with those same headaches with my Neakasa boxes. They’ve been dependable, and that reliability makes a huge difference.
I've only had the device up and running for a little over a week, but so far it's working wonderfully. Now, I have a cat that makes it his goal to take all the litter out and this one has helped but not completely stopped it. Best one to deter it so far though.
I bought this to replace my Litter Robot 3. My cats are getting older, and one was starting to have litter box issues because I suspect he was uncomfortable in the LR3. Although it took some time to convince my cats to use it (using old litter helped), my cats seem much more comfortable in the open top Neakasa M1 Lite. I was concerned that it was a bit high for them, but a step stool helped with that. The M1 Lite seems very well-built. It's easy to clean. The empty function does a good job of dumping all the used litter, and the litter compartment is not heavy so I can easily carry it outside for a deep clean. To prevent smears, it does a pre-sift back and forth to make sure everything is covered before it's dumped. The waste bin is large and holds a lot. It also does a good job of trapping smells. Really happy with this purchase.
I love the Neakasa M1, but my cats have been kicking out so much litter that there was a big mess around the litter. This anti-scatter guard helps a lot. There's still some scattered litter from them jumping out of the litter, but there's a lot less. I hesitated screwing a hole into my nice Neakasa, but it was worth it.
I have a cat grazer. She is a picky eater and doesn't like most dry foods. She ends up wasting much of her canned food because it sits out all day, and I don't have time to prepare fresh canned food 4-6 times a day. The Neakasa has allowed me to portion out the 200 calories she needs across 6 meals spread throughout the day. No more wasted food. The Neakasa does all the rest. Once I enter the food, it lets me know how many grams she needs based on the type of food I am using. It is neat too!!
I am genuinely surprised by how much I like this feeder. My cats eat freeze-dried food, but there is one problem: none of them will touch it once it's rehydrated. They like it dry and crumbled, either by itself or sprinkled over other food. Since this feeder is marketed primarily around turning freeze-dried food into freshly rehydrated meals, I wasn't sure it was going to work for us.
It turns out that it absolutely does.
One of my favorite things about the Riko is that you do not have to add water to the food. I can schedule a portion of dry freeze-dried food, and the machine grinds it and dispenses it into the bowl without rehydrating it. It comes out in sort of a little donut shape, nicely crumbled and ready to eat. One of my cats especially loves freeze-dried food this way, and I currently have the Riko scheduled to feed it twice a day. The other cats will eat it as well, but not as their main food as the one cat does.
Of course, I did try the rehydration feature first. The app allows you to select different food-to-water ratios, so there is quite a bit of control over the consistency. Unfortunately, my cats remained completely unimpressed with my attempt to improve their hydration. That's a cat problem, not a Riko problem. I have water fountains throughout the house that they happily use, so I've accepted defeat and let them have their freeze-dried food the way they like it.
The app gives you a lot of control over the feeder. You can set feeding times, portion sizes and food-to-water ratios, as well as view feeding information. Scheduling has worked very reliably for me. When I tell it to feed at 5:00, it feeds at 5:00.
There is also a Freshness feature that I initially didn't understand. I noticed that after dry food had been sitting in the bowl for a while, the machine would suddenly retract it, add water and put it back out. After exploring the app, I discovered what was happening. With Freshness enabled, the machine has an observation period and, if food remains after about an hour, it can add water to it. If the food is still there later, the bowl is eventually retracted because the machine considers the rehydrated food too old to leave available.
That's actually a very clever feature if your cat eats rehydrated food. Mine don't, so adding water to leftovers pretty much guaranteed they would become permanent leftovers. I simply disabled Freshness in the app. Now their food remains dry and available for them to come back to when they want it. I really appreciate that Neakasa gives you that choice rather than forcing one feeding method.
The food reservoir is a nice size, especially considering that the machine itself is smaller than I expected. There is also a desiccant bag to help keep the food dry, with a color indicator to let you know when it needs to be replaced. The water reservoir is quite large as well if you're using the hydration features.
I also like the overall design. It looks very streamlined, and when the bowl is retracted it has a surprisingly small footprint for everything that's going on inside it. The removable stainless steel bowl is another plus, and two bowls are included so you can swap one out while the other is being cleaned.
It does make some noise while it's operating. You're not going to mistake it for a silent gravity feeder. The first few times it ran, all of my cats stopped what they were doing and stood there staring at it, trying to figure out what this strange new machine was doing. However, I wouldn't call the noise annoyingly loud.
It also plays a little musical sound as the feeding process finishes. My cats figured that one out remarkably quickly. Now when they hear the machine operating and the melody, they know food is coming and approach the feeder when it's finished. Apparently I've accidentally created a tiny feline dinner bell.
Another feature I really appreciate is the backup battery. According to the manufacturer, it can keep the feeder operating for up to seven days during a power outage. For an automatic feeder, having backup power gives me considerably more confidence in relying on scheduled meals.

The price is probably my biggest hesitation. This is not an inexpensive way to feed a cat. However, after actually living with it and learning everything it can do, I understand the price better than I did initially. This isn't simply an automatic dispenser. It portions the food, processes it, can rehydrate it to different consistencies, manages freshness, follows a schedule, provides app control and can continue operating during a power outage.
Most importantly for me, the rehydration feature is optional. That's the feature I think could easily be missed when looking at the product page. If your cat loves rehydrated freeze-dried food, you can take advantage of everything Riko was primarily designed to do. If your cat is like mine and considers adding water to perfectly good freeze-dried food an unforgivable offense, the Riko can still be a very useful automatic feeder.
I've been using it long enough now to get past the novelty and see how it fits into our normal routine, and I'm impressed. It's well designed, reliable so far, highly customizable, and my cats have accepted it surprisingly quickly. I expected to find this interesting. I didn't expect to like it this much.
I love this product! My cat is the best but I hate cleaning the litter! And fighting with my teenager for help makes us both crazy, so now I only have to fight with him once a month! So much better! My house feels so much cleaner now!
I have 4 of these units & have gifted my son one as well. I bought my first ones from Kickstarter and have not had any issues with them. The app is nice to so that you can keep an eye on the usage and cleaning.
I want to cheer for the tofu but I'm not there yet. I'm thrilled to not have to deal with dust, but I'm still cleaning up litter daily. I noticed when the M1 cleans, some of the tofu falls out. I'm also still unsure how much to put in the litter box since it's different than clay litter. I use less but it doesn't seem like enough. And unfortunately, my cat has had two accidents since switching.
Overall, I really like the Neakasa Riko and think it’s a great product. It’s convenient and has made feeding my cats easier, but the software is still pretty buggy. At the moment, it requires some babysitting, so I’m not completely comfortable relying on it while I’m away. Once the software issues are fixed, I could definitely see myself rating it higher.
I purchased the Neakasa M1 so I would have a second automatic litter box running while I was away on vacation (I have a Litter Robot 4 and keep a regular litter box around for that picky cat). I am disappointed that it fills up a lot faster than my litter robot does. I generally only need to empty it once a week, the Neakasa I already had to empty it 4 days after setting it up (and yes the bottom part is fully extended).
I wanted to return it but the return policy sucks. I have to pay for shipping and it would end up being almost $200 to send that big box and the Airstep back. Customer service is good and quick to tell you all those disappointing answers.
It works for what it is, but if you have multiple cats (I have 3) don't expect it to let you go too long without having to empty it.
originally bought a robo litter box but my cat did not like it at all, i think the open concept design of this one is so much more comfortable for my cat. definitely helps with the smell and easier clean up. it was so easy to set up and love the app as well. i’ve had it for about a week, so i’m interested to see how it holds up.

He loves being groomed by both the brush and the mat detangler. The vacuum is quiet and doesn't seem to bug him at all, especially since the noise comes from the machine and not the brush. The way the button on the handle contracts the brush and engages the vacuum is really an ingenious design. Also, the donut shape is adorable. I have zero regrets.
This is a much more substantial machine than I was expecting. It has some weight to it and feels more like a small appliance than a typical automatic pet feeder. It was extremely well packaged in thick molded inserts, and the different compartments were secured and sealed when it arrived.
The overall construction feels solid and the design is really nice. It comes with stainless steel bowls and everything is incorporated into one unit, so even with everything this feeder is designed to do, it doesn’t feel like a bunch of separate pieces you have to put together.
What really interested me about this one is that it isn’t just another automatic feeder that dumps dry kibble into a bowl. It’s designed to make fresh rehydrated meals in small controlled portions, so you’re getting the convenience of scheduled feeding while also adding water to the food for additional hydration. That’s a really cool concept, especially for cats.
I haven’t put food through it yet, so I can’t fairly comment on portion accuracy, long-term reliability, the app, or how well the dispensing system performs. I don’t want to rate features I haven’t personally tested. What I can say is that the packaging, construction and overall quality made an excellent first impression. I’ll update my review once it’s been put through regular use.
We had three versions of the litter robot and switched to this because our oldest male cat was too big and would stick out of it. He's 16 pounds. We got this, installed the guard on it, and it's great. The step is a little too low for my eldest cat because of the guard, so I bought some different steps from Amazon. I highly recommend this unit. I would get the guard just in case. Our boy likes to aggressively cover his business and the guard keeps the litter inside the box.

It's great, my cats love it! I have a Maine Coon and she fits comfortably in the litter box. She is also very shy so I was worried she wouldn't use it but beacuse the litter box is not covered she wasn't scared to go in, she used it the same day I set it up.
I love everything about it except they don’t have enough guard selections. The largest one is shorter than I’d like to cut his hair. Otherwise it’s great. If you like very short haircuts for your pup.
This is a very good cat feeder and has been really helpful for preparing meals for my cats. I especially like the fresh-made meal feature because it makes it much easier to turn dry food into a wet meal without having to prepare everything by hand each time.
I think this is especially useful when you have senior cats or cats that need extra care with their meals. Preparing the right texture and consistency for them can take a lot of time, and this machine makes the process much more convenient. The automatic feeding schedule is also helpful for keeping meals on a regular routine.
The built-in 2500mAh battery is another nice feature because it can keep the feeder running during a power outage. Overall, this feeder saves me a lot of time and makes preparing wet meals much easier. This is my 3rd different brand of automatic litter box and I have to say, based on different factors, is my favorite.
My comparison is using a OneIsAll and a litter robot.
Price: for what I am getting, the box, the app and the free service the price wins out. Not the cheapest on the market but I think best for value.
Setup: easiest of the 3.
Sound: Definitely the quietest. I can barely hear it and it is only about 15 ft from my workspace.
Capacity: the waste drawer is easy to use and I think the volume is a bit more.
So far it’s the best at limiting litter from sticking to the rake mechanism. I thought it would be worse based on it being plastic. On both of the other stainless steel ones I had to treat the rake with a not stick product. The one specifically for this purpose is expensive and not that effective.
Smell: I think all three of them have been good, but the Neakasa has a stick on barrier that is meant to keep odor in I think. It also came with a replacement strip of it as well.
Safety: much better than the OneIsAll which I have seen my cats get in when it’s halfway upside down in cleaning mode. Litter robot is best at this.
Weighing: I have 3 cats. 2 which are very close in weight and I think it’s still learning. I put a camera above and I correct the name assignments. Litter robot no better, even with the camera as my 2 boys are hard to tell apart
Overall: I am really happy with the litter box. I had purchased 2 of the OneOsAll and one failed and was refunded by Chewy. I ordered the Litter Robots because they claimed to be FSA eligible, but were not with my company. They did take them back for refund with no issue, the price point is way too high.
If this other OneIsAll craps out, I’ll definitely replace it with the Neakasa.
I have just added a second cat litter box to my home.
After my older cat passed away, I stored my first box. When my daughter got a kitten, I brought it back out. The kitten took to it immediately. After several weeks, my husband decided to get a companion, for the first kitten. After getting another kitten, from a local rescue, the litter box was being used a lot. I decided to purchase a second box. Both are working great. Both are quiet, so quiet that it can put it into my parlor. I now have one in my laundry room and parlor. The closed in reservoir keeps my dogs from getting into the used litter.
I would recommend this product to anyone.
